Eco-LabelGBC Italy - EMAS - International Standard ISO 14001

The Eco-Label is a voluntary scheme designed to encourage businesses to market products and services that are kinder to the environment and for European consumers - including public and private purchasers - to easily identify them.

The Flower is recognized as one of Europe’s premier awards for products and services which are a genuinely better choices for the environment. The European Eco-label is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production and helps manufacturers, retailers and service providers to get recognition for good standards, and purchasers to make reliable choices. You can find the Flower throughout the European Union as well as in Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.

The key aims are to achieve significant environmental improvements by developing, publishing and promoting criteria that push the market forward, in order to minimize the environmental impacts of a wide range of products and services over their whole life-cycle and to ensure the credibility of the award by efficient administration and through criteria which:

  • Take account of consumer health.

  • Require good product performance.

  • Are developed transparently and cost-effectively, with the participation of stakeholders.

  • Are reasonably attainable and up to date.

  • Encourage manufacturers, retailers and service providers to apply for the award, to publicize their own participation in the scheme, and to promote the availability of eco-labeled products and information about them.

  • Encourage purchasers to buy products and services with the award.

  • Improve consumer awareness and behavior regarding the environmentally optimal use of products and services.

The Italian GBC is working to have the first LEED manual for the Italian market, which must be approved by the USGBC before it can become official. GBC Italy intends to introduce the LEED - Leadership Energy in Environmental and Design - independent certification system in Italy, the parameters of which establish precise design and construction criteria for buildings that are healthy and energy efficient with limited environmental impact.

The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is the EU voluntary instrument which acknowledges organizations that improve their environmental performance on a continuous basis. EMAS registered organizations are legally compliant, run an environment management system and report on their environmental performance through the publication of an independently verified environmental statement. They are recognized by the EMAS logo, which guarantees the reliability of the information provided.

EMAS requires participating organizations to implement an environmental management system (EMS). The EMS must meet the requirements of the International Standard BS EN ISO 14001. Many organizations progress from ISO 14001 to EMAS and maintain certification / registration to both.

The EMS provides the organization’s management with a structured framework for identifying, evaluating, managing and improving its environmental performance. It helps to ensure that the organization’s overall environmental goals, as set out in its environmental policy, are implemented throughout the organization and that employees, contractors and suppliers know their roles and responsibilities in helping the organization to achieve them.

Regular monitoring and auditing of the organization’s environmental performance and the system that is put in place to improve it, provide management with a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of the EMS. The EMS also provides a system for collecting and managing data on environmental performance which is used in the environmental statement, and can be used to make validated product claims.

EMAS requires participating organizations to improve their environmental performance. Using fewer raw materials; consuming less energy; producing less waste – these actions all help to improve the environment and to make companies more economically competitive.

It is a requirement of EMAS that participating organizations regularly produce a public environmental statement that reports on their environmental performance. It is this voluntary publication of environmental verifier, that gives EMAS and those organizations that participate enhanced credibility and recognition.

LEED - Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design
What does it mean to be green? When looking at building products LEED Certified is what people seek. LEED is a comprehensive system to ensure that buildings are energy efficient and create a healthy environment for the occupants. LEED is a thrird-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark. However, building materials used only make up a small part of the total LEED program, and tile is even a smaller part of those building materials.

Since the U.S. Green Building Council introduced its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program with the Version 1.0 Pilot in 1998, green building programs have been, and continue to be, developed for nearly every type of construction project. There are separate LEED Green Building Rating Systems for commercial construction, home building, neighborhood development, remodeling of existing buildings, and even specific industries, such as health care facilities and schools. These rating systems provide sustainable construction guidelines and a building project that achieves LEED certification can truly say that is "green".

Please see individual product page for complete Leed information.
Within each series Leed information can vary from color to color.

In general, Italy and Japan’s environmental standards are very strict. Most factories, including the smaller ones, are in compliance with the ISO 14001 International Standard, but are not members of Eco, Emas, GBC due to the costs involved.
